Opportunities to Apply for in October

Effective Altruism, Neuroscience Hackathon, and The Rise Challenge

Hi guys! One of my favorite "holidays" is just around the corner—the college application deadline! Of course, I'm just joking, but if you want to ensure that your university application stands out, signing up for opportunities that align with your interests is a great way to do so. Today, I've prepared a list of opportunities I believe are worth applying for this month. I tried to select a fairly diverse range of opportunities, so no matter what you're interested in, there should be something for you. 🎃

#1 EAGxVirtual 2023 Event

Application Deadline: 11:59 p.m. UTC on Thursday, November 16.

If you've ever wondered how to use your skills to have the biggest positive impact in the world, then you've probably heard about effective altruism. And if you haven't, here's an article from me that can help you get acquainted with it a little bit. Effective altruism is a movement of people who want to find the most effective ways to solve the world's most significant problems. So, no matter what you're interested in, this conference could be a great opportunity for you to explore how you can apply your skills and knowledge to contribute to solving global problems.

The conference is taking place online from November 17 to 19, 2023. At the event, you can expect:

  1. Action-oriented content that will be relevant to people from various contexts and locations.

  2. A schedule tailored for participants from different time zones.

  3. A career fair where you can meet various EA-aligned organizations and nonprofits.

  4. An extensive ambassador program connecting attendees to more experienced community members.

  5. An always-available virtual venue (GatherTown) for unstructured conversations, socials, and private meetings.

So, if that sounds interesting to you, you definitely should apply.

#2 Rise Challenge

Application Deadline: January 17, 2024

Eligibility Criteria: Applicants for the 2024 cohort must be between the ages of 15 and 17 as of July 1, 2024, meaning they were born on or between July 2, 2006, and July 1, 2009.

The application process of the Rise Challenge

Rise offers a range of flexible opportunities, both in terms of the topics you can choose for your projects and access to technology. This program provides you with resources and assistance to build your ability to undertake projects, whether independently or as part of a team, on any topic that interests you. Plus, you have the chance to win some amazing prizes. Here's a brief summary of the program:

"Every application year, Rise extends an invitation to 15-17-year-olds from around the world to participate in the Rise Challenge. Unlike many traditional applications, Rise employs videos, projects, and group interviews, providing applicants with multiple avenues to showcase their potential. For those without access to technology, we offer an alternative paper application pathway.

Applicants introduce themselves through video or text responses, create individual projects that showcase their talents and benefit their communities, complete assessments, and peer-review other applicants' projects, among other activities.

Once applicants complete the Rise Challenge, Rise selects up to 500 Finalists to proceed to 'Finalist Days,' where they demonstrate their motivations, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork skills through an innovative interview format. From the pool of Finalists, we choose up to 100 Rise Global Winners to support them as they continue to serve others throughout their lifetime."

If this sounds like something you might be interested in, I highly recommend applying. Keep in mind that the application process can be quite lengthy, so START EARLY.

#3 NeuroTechX Hackathon 2023

Application Deadline: The hackathon will take place on the weekend of December 2nd and 3rd so I recommend applying before this date.

Here’s a breakdown of the hackathon’s schedule.

This hackathon is open to anyone interested in neuroscience, whether you're just starting to explore the field or already have some knowledge.

"The goal of this hackathon is to bring together enthusiasts and specialists from diverse backgrounds to collaborate on exploring potential applications of Neurotechnology and Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs), as well as to develop innovative projects😎.

Before the Hackathon begins, we will provide a 'zero-to-hero' beginner crash course on Neurotechnology and BCIs, designed to give newcomers a strong foundation. It's a fantastic way to become part of our community!"

The hackathon will be conducted online, but we also have in-person chapters in various locations worldwide, including Paris (France), Vienna (Austria), Zurich (Switzerland), Delhi (India), Kharagpur (India), Brasília (Brazil), Los Angeles (USA), and London (UK).

I'm a big fan of hackathons and have personally learned a lot by brainstorming solutions to problems in a time-constrained environment. Also, the opportunity to meet awesome people and collaborate with them as a team is a great bonus.

I definitely recommend y’all to apply!

Here it is for now, but be sure to subscribe to the newsletter so you don't miss my upcoming posts. I'll be sharing more opportunities like this. Take care and bye! 😊
